Intermediate Crochet: Texture, Patterns, & a Cozy Cowl

A welcoming next step for students who have completed Intro to Crochet or have basic crochet experience. This condensed seasonal course strengthens familiar skills, introduces textured stitches, and helps students follow writtenpatterns with more confidence while making a useful cold-weather accessory.

Practice, Explore, Create

Students do not need perfect stitches or fast hands. Questions, mistakes, and different learning speeds are part of the class. Demonstrations, small practice samples, and individual troubleshooting help students understand their work and build independence.

Weekly Plan

Review basic stitches, counting, turning, and tension. Identify the parts of a stitch and where to insert the hook. Practice spotting missing stitches or growing edges, then undoing and correcting work with confidence.

Make small swatches of moss stitch, lemon peel stitch, and back-loop ribbing. Practice abbreviations and repeats, turning-chain instructions, and working into stitches versus spaces. Choose a texture for the cowl; swatches stay small so the focus is understanding, not speed.

Follow a short written pattern to begin the cowl in rows. Check dimensions, maintain stitch counts, and recognize the pattern in the fabric. Discuss how yarn, hook size, and tension affect the result.  Seaming and end-weaving demonstrations plus written finishing instructions.

Amanda Marie Davis

Amanda Marie is a local crochet artist, beginner crochet instructor, and medical assistant with a passion for creativity, lifelong learning, and accessible education. A medical assistant by day and crocheter all day, Amanda discovered crochet as both a creative outlet and a grounding practice, quickly falling in love with the craft and the sense of community it can create. Drawing from her background in patient care and hands-on teaching, Amanda approaches instruction with patience, encouragement, and an understanding that everyone learns at their own pace. Her classes are designed to help beginners feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and building confidence through practice rather than perfection. When she isn’t teaching or working in healthcare, Amanda enjoys experimental crochet projects while continuing to learn new techniques herself.
