Research

Dr. Vaughn's current research under Jeff Twiss’s mentorship works to understand the mechanisms of control by RNA binding proteins (RBP) on specific mRNAs in peripheral axons. Localized mRNAs are maintained in populations of both translationally active and repressed states along the sciatic nerve. RBPs can rapidly mobilize in response to stressors, balancing mRNA storage and local translation. These dramatic shifts in the axonal translatome are necessary for regeneration after peripheral nerve injury. We seek to continue to identify methods of control, including upstream master regulators of stress signaling which can be targeted for therapeutics to improve outcomes after mechanical or chemical injury.
