Bio / Background:

Dr. Carlie Sloan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of South Carolina, in the Clinical-Community area. She received her Ph.D. in Human Development and Family Studies from The Pennsylvania State University in 2024 and went on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship in prevention, dissemination, and implementation sciences at Arizona State University. Prior to her graduate training, she earned a bachelor's degree in Psychology from the University of Notre Dame.

Research:

Dr. Sloan's work combines developmental, family, and prevention approaches to investigate two lines of research. First, she aims to understand how the family context shapes parent and child development - across days and years - with the goal of identifying malleable, high-impact preventive intervention targets. She is particularly interested in the prevention of adolescent mental health problems, substance use, and other behavioral risk outcomes. Dr. Sloan's second line of research investigates how family, program, and contextual factors impact families' engagement with and benefits derived from preventive interventions. Her overarching goal is to optimize evidence-based prevention approaches in order to meet families' unique needs, conserve resources, and adapt to different contexts.
