Why did you choose USC Rice School of Law?
I chose USC Rice mainly because of the people. I was not initially planning on going to law school out of the state, but after touring the school and talking to students I realized that the school offered a lot of opportunities with support systems in place! The faculty is very involved and tries to set students up to succeed before classes even start. Additionally, everyone I met or emailed with was so kind and assuring. I knew that if I was going to attend law school in another state, I would need the guidance and support of others to thrive in a new environment.
What advice would you give a first-year law student?
Talk to anyone and everyone you can! I came to law school as an out-of-state and first-generation student, so I did not have a network built in South Carolina when I arrived. It honestly took me a while to get used to, but I learned very fast how important these connections can be not only for obtaining a job postgrad or during the summer but also for figuring out next steps in your education or career. From talking to attorneys in the area, I have grown to have a better understanding of what my best qualities to market are and what areas of law that may fit well within.
What accomplishment are you most proud of?
I am very proud of the work ethic I developed and honed in my first year. The first year was really daunting for me, and I had to work hard to figure out what reading and studying styles work best for me. I knew school would have a lot of work and long hours, but I am very proud of myself for rising to meet the challenge and pushing through when some tactics were not working well for me. I could not have done it alone though, the people I have met while in school have helped to support me and each other throughout the year.
