Background

Cem Öztürk is a professor of marketing and Moore Distinguished Fellow at the Darla Moore School of Business. Previously, he was an assistant professor of marketing at the Georgia Institute of Technology. His scholarly work centers on empirical quantitative marketing. Broadly, his research focuses on answering substantive questions in two research streams: (i) marketing and public policy and (ii) channels and competition. Within these streams, his papers have shed new light on issues such as environmental sustainability, social impact, competitive spillover effects, and pricing. From a methodological viewpoint, he studies these issues using state-of-the-art causal inference methods, structural econometric models, spatial econometric models, and optimization algorithms.

His interdisciplinary work has appeared in Marketing Science, Journal of Marketing Research, Management Science, Production and Operations Management, Journal of International Business, and Journal of Retailing, among others. His paper titled "Consumer Response to Chapter 11 Bankruptcy: Negative Demand Spillover to Competitors" was featured by Harvard Law School Bankruptcy Roundtable, Chicago Business Review, and Oxford Business Law Blog. His article titled "Price Reactions to Rivals' Local Channel Exits" was featured in the Capital Ideas Magazine of Chicago Booth. More recently, his research on inequalities in auto dealers' interest rate markups was featured in an INFORMS news release and in the Chicago Booth Review.

Cem serves on the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Marketing Research. He has also served as a referee for the Journal of Marketing, Management Science, Marketing Science, Quantitative Marketingand Economics, International Journal of Research in Marketing, Production and Operations Management, Energy Economics, and the MSI Alden G. Clayton Doctoral Dissertation Proposal Competition.

At the Moore School, Cem received the Alfred G. Smith, Jr. Award for Excellence in Teaching in 2025. He was named Best Elective Faculty of the Year by the M.S. in Business Analytics program in 2025 and by the Full-time MBA program in 2024, and was recognized as a USC Career Influencer in 2025.

In 2019, Cem was selected as one of the "World's Best 40 Under 40 MBA Professors" by Poets & Quants. At Georgia Tech, he received three university-level teaching awards – the Class of 1940 W. Roane Beard Outstanding Teacher Award (2019), the CTL/BP Junior Faculty Teaching Excellence Award (2017), and the Class of 1940 Course Survey Teaching Effectiveness Award (2013, 2014, and 2017). Additionally, he was the Full-time MBA Elective Professor of the Year in 2014, 2018, and 2020; and the Evening MBA Elective Professor of the Year in 2015.
