The USC College of Pharmacy congratulates its graduating students on an outstanding showing in this year's American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Pharmacy Residency Match — a pivotal milestone for pharmacists pursuing advanced postgraduate training.
Following Phase II for the match, 98 percent of Gamecocks who applied to postgraduate year one positions attained a match. In total, student pharmacists and one alumnus secured 39 PGY1 residencies and seven fellowships.
Twenty-eight alumni matched to PGY2 residencies for a 97 percent match rate. Positions spanned a wide range of specialized practice areas such as ambulatory care, critical care, emergency medicine, informatics, infectious diseases, internal medicine, oncology, pediatric oncology, pediatrics, psychiatry, and solid organ transplant.
Matched students will train across 14 states, having earned positions at some of the nation's most prestigious health systems, including Duke University Medical Center, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and New York-Presbyterian Hospital in practice areas such as ambulatory care, critical care and emergency medicine, infectious diseases, informatics, internal medicine, oncology, pediatrics, psychiatry and organ transplant.
Several will serve in underserved and rural communities in South Carolina, including positions at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood, Hope Health and McLeod Regional Medical Center in Florence, as well as Columbia VA Medical Center. Their commitment to staying close to home reflects a dedication not only to their profession, but to the communities that shaped them.
Professor Brandon Bookstaver, director of the college's residency and fellowship training program, is proud of the dedication the students have shown throughout the matching process.
"I am so proud of what our graduates have accomplished this Match Day. They have dedicated an incredible amount of time and effort to this process and seeing them earn positions at some of the top programs in the country, while others choose to serve right here in South Carolina, is a true reflection of the well-rounded training they've received at USC."
